Miracle
Power?
It is dangerous, though,
to dismiss new products or equipment and assume
that the supplier's hype is just hype, even through
is often is. So when Bill Savage of Power Tec
called me a short while ago to enthuse about a
new panel repair system from Japan, to which he
had just secured the UK rights I thought it would
be worth while to listen as Bill himself has been
around this industry longer than he would care
to think about, seen it all and done most of it!
Miracle
Panel Repair System
According to Bill, the Miracle Panel Repair
System (for that is its name) can reduce certain
panel repair times to a fraction of what they
would be using conventional equipment and techniques.

Inevitably, I suppose when
you have been around this business as long as
I have, (writes Chris Mann), one tends to take
a slightly cynical view when somebody tells you
about some wonderful new product or piece of equipment
that is going to transform the productivity of
bodyshops using it. Progress tends to be in small
steps and over an extended period of time, rather
than in giant leaps.

Highly
effective
Without question, it is impressive and highly
effective. Just as we were finishing the demo
repairs, though, a Vauxhall Corsa which had suffered
three or four dents to the off-side front wing
was wheeled into the next bay, closely followed
by a Deejay estimator who calculated a repair
time of 2.5 hours prior to the job going in to
the bodyshop. Rather rashly, I thought, Ian Narraway
said that he could carry out the repairs in about
10% of that time so I decided to call his bluff
and ask Deejay proprietor Dave Shepherd if we
could go live and do a real repair on his damaged
Corsa. Dave agreed with alacrity and closely observed
by me, stopwatch in hand Ian set to.

Easy
puller
Working smoothly and efficiently but without a
hint of hate, Ian addressed each of the dents
in turn, welding the appropriate 'bits' then teasing
out the dents with one of the Easy Puller
tools from the system rack. Once the dents had
been pulled out of his satisfaction Ian went over
the repair areas with a body file, smoothing the
tiny imperfections back to a perfect body profile.
And the time taken? A total of twelve minutes,
from start to finish. Even the estimator was impressed.
'You've seen the time saved there, but we can
make even bigger savings where strip and fit is
involved, because the system works from the outside
of the panel', said Bill. The tool can be locked
whilst the panel is under tension so that plannishing
and reshaping can be carried out. Retensioning
is made by simply releasing and adjusting the
tool. At the same time the non-damaged area is
kept firmly in place ensuring the repair area
remains and sanding area and cutting down on paint
and sundry materials.

Huge
annual savings
According to Bill the system is particularly effective
also in repairing minor damage to sills, A posts
and B posts, and can also be used for shrinking
back panel stretch. By analyzing an average bodyshop
using the system, says Bill, he has calculated
that annual savings in excess of 30,000 are achievable
by using the Miracle Panel
Repair System. Having seen it in action,
I have no reason to doubt his statement. 'if any
bodyshop buying the system from me doesn't double
its original investment within the first twelve
months', states Bill confidently, 'we will give
them their money back'.
